Are the Royal family really a bunch of sponges?

Not at all. The Queen receives a large sum of money each year - the Civil List. This comes from taxpayers. However, this is in exchange for allowing the state to use thousands of properties the Crown owns. The annual rent on these would be far, far higher than the Civil list.
